The latest version of the SYMFONISK table lamp speaker has been released by IKEA U.S. in collaboration with Sonos. The smart lamp made its debut in 2019, marking the first time the American electronics manufacturer and the Swedish furniture behemoth collaborated. The new speaker-lamp features an upgraded acoustic architecture that employs a proprietary waveguide to create smooth sound from any direction.
The 2019 version may link to other Sonos devices through wi-fi or be used on its own to listen to over 100 streaming services. It is also Airplay 2 compliant, allowing users to stream audio directly from people’s Apple devices. In a press release, Stjepan Begic, product owner at IKEA of Sweden, said, “By incorporating a speaker into a table lamp, we can conserve space, eliminate clutter and create an atmosphere with both sound and light.” Since the debut of the original SYMFONISK device, he said, the brand has been able to learn a lot about adapting to the new device and user behavior accordingly. “For example, many users place the lamp speaker on a nightstand, prompting us to design a new, somewhat smaller lamp base,” he explained. Separate speaker lampshades and lamp bases are now available on the new SYMFONISK device, allowing for further customization. Lamp bases come in black or white, with either a black or white glass lampshade or textile. Before reaching all IKEA markets in 2022, the SYMFONISK table lamp speaker will be made available at IKEA U.S. stores, on IKEA-USE.com, and in select European countries beginning October 12.
