Moody Black Bathrooms Are The New Trend

As the all-over black kitchen trend continues its reign, a similar look has found its way into the lavatory. The decorating move of a black bathroom, which once felt a touch too ’80s bachelor pad, is being revisited by today’s top designers with luxurious materials—think charcoal-hued plaster walls, chunky jet-black marble, or a hit of something shimmery, like mica—for an effect that is chic and a tad mysterious. Go on and add a black toilet while you’re at it.

The black bathroom, it seems, is finally upstaging the serene, all-white-bath status quo in stylish homes across the globe.

One of the reasons for this resurgence may be that a black bathroom can feel surprisingly calming. The lack of color can create a sense of tranquility, especially when paired with natural materials like wood and stone. Black also has a way of making small spaces feel larger, so if your bathroom is on the petite side, this could be the way to go. The one caveat: Paired with white tile, a black tub might come off as too heavy and dark, but if you stick with grays, creams, or blacks for your tiles and add touches of light wood or stone throughout the room, it can be chic and sophisticated — even serene.

Lighting is another key element to consider in a black bathroom. Because this look can be quite dramatic, you’ll want to make sure the lighting is just right. A mix of overhead and task lighting will help to create the perfect atmosphere.

“The trend has been going on for a while,” says Suzanne Kasler, an Atlanta-based interior designer. “It’s been at Palm Beach and then here (in New York City), but it was even before that. It began with bronzes and browns for a moodier feeling.”According to design firm ASID, “Black bathrooms exude a feeling of luxury, power and mystery. They can be dramatic and sexy or moody and calming, depending on the materials used. Black creates a sense of depth and allows other features in the bathroom to really shine.”
